Selecting a Great Domain Name
A domain name is a unique name that people use to find your website. Only one person can be registered to a name at a time. You may have more than one domain name pointing to your site.
Choosing a domain name is an important part of your web strategy. Here are some power tips to get you started.
Power Tip #1: Simple to remember. You will be using your name in various advertising mediums (business cards, flyers, ads etc). Choose a name that someone will remember when they are on their computer. Stay away from abbreviations that don’t mean anything to the average person. Choose a name that invokes curiosity and describes what you do.
Power Tip #2: Simple to spell. Choose a name with common words that are easy to spell. If your name is easily misspelled consider registering the misspelling.
Power Tip #3: Simple to say. Choose a name that is easy to hear over the phone. Avoid names that you have to explain or spell.
Power Tip #4: Short in length. Choose a shorter name. If your name is longer, make sure it is easy to remember (see Tip #1).
Power Tip #5: Choose “.com” if possible. Other extensions are becoming popular (.net,.us, .ws), but people typically default to .com if they are unsure. It is appropriate to use .org for organizations.
Power Tip #6: Avoid Hyphens. They are hard to type and difficult to remember.
An Example:
Jane Doe is a florist and hands you her business card. In the middle of the card it reads – “www.janedoe.com”. What kind of image does this create in your head? Probably not much of one. Let’s say her card said “www.WeDeliverFlowers.com”. The picture in your head has probably changed to roses and delivery trucks and happy times.
Put some thought into your domain names! This can be a marketing tool in itself and will go a long way to promoting your website.
